Maona Cinema, pronounced Ma-oh-na, derives its name from the Shona language of Zimbabwe, where it means "You have seen." We are an independent boutique cinema, dedicated to offering a carefully curated selection of art house films from around the world. Our mission is to provide an intimate and immersive cinematic experience, showcasing both renowned and lesser-known masterpieces that push artistic boundaries and provoke thoughtful reflection. Maona Cinema serves as a cultural hub, fostering a deeper appreciation for global cinema in a unique and welcoming environment.
For Maona, cinema goes far beyond mere entertainment; it serves as a lifeline. Maona Cinema was born out of Maona Art, a creative initiative founded by Tatenda Jamera in 2021. This endeavour was driven by a deep desire to address the glaring absence of African cinema in independent cinemas across the UK. Starting with a program that toured various venues throughout the country, the vision soon evolved into establishing a permanent base.
We are immensely proud to have chosen Oswestry as the location for our first home. This vibrant town provides us with the perfect opportunity to cultivate and highlight the diverse world of cinema, with stories and cultures from every corner of the globe. Set against a backdrop steeped in African heritage, we aim to blend and honour both global and local traditions in a unique and meaningful way. As we begin this exciting journey toward a long-term vision, we invite you to join us in making history.
